Grade 4 students have been learning about Ainu culture
as part of their Unit of Inquiry; Where We Are in Place and Time. The students were treated to an enriching musical experience during their ICJC learning. Tomoko Tomita, an 88years old musician, played the tonkori, a traditional Ainu instrument. Tomita-sensei also wore a traditional kimono that she handmade and a 100 year old hat which was given to her by her sensei. Students have been learning about the Ainu as part the unit's central idea: People continue to migrate for many reasons. There have been strong connections made with the Ainu culture during the subjects of dance, visual art and Japanese.
