Janine Tougas and Valerie Monk from Winnipeg Manitoba have integrated their training in the Satir model with the age-old wisdom and joy of traditional folklore. They will be presenting and facilitating one of the activities of this new Satir games kit called Playing with Archetypes – Fairy Tales: Our Tales. Janine has donated 100 of these kits as a special fundraiser to create a scholarship fund for Indigenous students wishing to pursue training in expressive arts therapy programs. Materials needed for the experience are a journal or paper for taking personal notes, sticky notes, and colored pencils or markers.
Janine Tougas
Janine is first and foremost a storyteller, using the power of stories and objects in educational and therapeutic settings. Janine has a Master of Fine Arts specializing in puppetry and object theater as well as a Master of Education specializing in counselling. She also obtained a certificate for 500 hours of study from The Satir Institute of Manitoba.
Valerie Monk
Valerie has studied the Satir Model for 30 years, under the mentorship of Maria Gomori, colleague and friend of Virginia Satir and a world-renowned expert in the Satir Model. Valerie had the privilege of assisting Maria in writing a book based on Family Therapy and The Satir Model, published in 2015. More recently, she collaborated with Janine Tougas in the development of Playing with Archetypes: Fairy Tales – Our Tales. Using multi-modal approaches, Valerie regularly integrates activities from the Satir Model into her professional practice and personal life.
