My girlfriend and I decided to do a west coast tour for our birthdays. We flew to Seattle and rented a car to drive back down home in San Diego. After a couple of nights in Seattle, we headed down to Portland where we stayed for two nights before starting our long journey. I wanted to hug the coast as much as possible, so I planned for Oregon Coast Highway 101 after Eugene, Oregon. As soon as we hit Highway 38 west, the view was AMAZING!!! The drive from North Bend Oregon down to Eureka California, our next stop, was probably the most amazing and beautiful drive I have ever done. If you ever get a chance to do the Oregon Coast Highway, I highly recommend it!
After a night in Eureka, we planned to take the 101 all the way down to San Francisco. Only after visiting a map and bag shop in Eureka did I find out about the old highway 101 and Avenue of the Giants. A detour about 30 miles south of Eureka is more than worth the additional hour or so of driving.
San Francisco, wow, what an amazing view from the time lapse I did. Oh yea that...time lapse. It was the first time I ever tried doing this. I learned from Seattle, where I set it on aperture priority. Only after I saw the dreaded "flickering" did I find out you're supposed to use full manual.
A quick stop in Vallejo to visit one of my best buddies, we started the long drive down to Santa Barbara. I really wanted to take Highway 1 through Monterey, but we were strapped for time and wanted to have birthday dinner in Santa Barbara. So back to the 101 it was. The drive was mostly "Eh", but a shortcut taking the 154 through Lake Cachuma is another beautiful drive, especially at dusk. It even has a nice little treat at the end right before you hit Santa Barbara.
Another short coastal drive to Los Angeles for some shopping and finally back down to San Diego. This was probably one of the most amazing adventures I have ever done. I can't wait to do it all over again. Maybe this time just fly up to San Francisco and take highway 1 all the way down to San Diego. I hope you enjoy the short film :)
