This is not just a nice to have, but an absolute essential in today’s marketplace. The things that sell people into opportunities, whether a new graduate or a senior hire, are the same. They’re what I call the 3 C’S: Clarity, Confidence and Conviction.
If you know why you are in the room for an interview or pitch (that is, if you have real clarity of purpose), you will naturally present yourself with confidence and leave a strong impression of conviction in what it is you want to do. That invariably leads people to succeed. After all, people like people who know what they’re about, what they can offer and where they’re going. Simple as that.
But there’s another reason. As we all know, the current economy is unforgiving and increasingly competitive. You face competition from all sides and all nations. In response, recruiters, whether agencies or in-house departments, are pigeonholing people more quickly than ever. Therefore, if you set sail on the wrong course, it is getting harder to change tack. You have to try to get things right at the beginning, hence we start working with some people as soon as they leave school, because after all, university is the best time to experiment with different ideas, form decisions and prepare yourself for the world of work.
