In the summer of 2020, I took instant photos and videos in the centre of Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany. In autumn / winter 2020, I worked on it again in my studio in Düsseldorf. In order to videotape the instant photos, I had a steel frame lasered in the dimensions of the instant photos. In the first video shots, my perspective through the camera felt very dominant. I recorded the frame in front of a green fabric. Using a keying effect in the video editing program, I then made tests with video shots from Eisenhüttenstadt. Here, too, my perspective remained dominant. The reality of the city seemed to me to be obscured by these subjectives.
For an audio work that I produced 2020 as part of the project „Eisenhüttenstadt between Model and Museum“ organized by the Kunstverein im Kloster Neuzelle, I had also done research in the corporate archives of the ArcelorMittal steelworks in Eisenhüttenstadt. Raw footage of the film „Stadt des Morgen / City of Tomorrow“, produced by the EKO Betriebsfilmstudios (corporate film studios) in 1965, I kept in memory: The director repeated scenes with his young amateur actor. He corrected a number of continuity errors. Through the repetitions, the viewer could perceive the background and what was randomly recorded.
I had the feeling that the medium of film allows access to reality. Especially the raw footage, which does not hide its being made, its fictional presence. The boys and the camera mans perspectives as well a coincidences dominate my subjective point of view.
