With Mint Festival just around the corner, here’s what went down at the organisers’ big summer bash with Visionquest, Cassy, Loco Dice and Sven Väth…
We’ve taken our sweet time in putting this together, but if we wanted to look clever we’d just say we’d timed our coverage of Cocoon In The Park perfectly to bring you some happy memories ahead of this weekend’s Mint Festival. As you may know, Cocoon In The Park is a huge favourite with EQTV, and this year’s bash did nothing to damage its standing. In fact, the star-studded line-up – Visionquest, Cassy, Loco Dice and, of course, Papa Sven himself – was arguably the strongest yet. So click play for just a few of the Svenanigans from the summer party – and read on to find out what the organisers have planned for this weekend, as ROB CHADWICK talks to Mint Club resident and promoter Bobby O'Donell about the four-arena festival at Lotherton Hall in Leeds…
What was the thinking behind running another festival in Leeds?
The concept is to put on an event that includes other brands involved with The Mint Club and Mint Warehouse, with each night curating their own arena. Obviously there’s a massive student population in Leeds, and we wanted to welcome them by holding this festival, while having something our regulars would want to go to.
You have your own little element in the shape of Black Light, a more techno/darker side to the festival, if you like. Will this be a regular event for the future?
Yes it will. Initially Black Light started as Mint Presents, which was something we decided to do where we could book acts that wouldn't fit with System but we all really liked. So Black Light is being introduced at Mint Festival but it will continue at The Mint Club or Mint Warehouse as a regular night.
Who are you personally looking forward to seeing the most?
Reboot, Seth Troxler, Sandwell District and Adam Beyer – but there is such a wealth of talent on offer.
Leeds has been described as the epicentre of clubbing outside of Ibiza. Would you agree with that?
Leeds is a massively popular city for nightlife. Even though it’s relatively small, there is so much going on. I suppose it’s different to Ibiza as Ibiza lasts throughout the summer and Leeds is all year round – a lot of people who study in Leeds go to Ibiza for the summer so there are definitely similarities.
What we can expect from The Mint Club and Mint Warehouse come the winter?
We’re going to be holding more System events at The Mint Club as well as Black Light events . It will be great to be back at The Mint Club, but we’re also doing things at Mint Warehouse too.
Mint Festival is on September 29 at Lotherton Hall in Leeds. Headliners include Wolf & Lamb, Soul Clap, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Surgeon, Ben Klock, Adam Beyer, Sandwell District and Speedy J. Visit mintfestival.co.uk
