The conference was organized by the Light Millennium and was co-sponsored by Stevens Institute of Technology.
Nuri M. ÇOLAKOGLU is one of the most prominent figures of the Turkish media. He is the Chairman & CEO of the New Media Company TV and Advertisement Co; and also the Broadcast & Print Media Coordinator at Dogan Media Group in Istanbul, Turkey.
The TV program opens with Prof. Edward FOSTER’s insightful introduction of Mr. ÇOLAKOGLU, his background, and the Turkish media in general. Prof. FOSTER is the founding editor of Talisman Publishing House and professor of English & American Literature at Stevens.
In his presentation, Nuri M. ÇOLAKOGLU states that Turkey now has become a role model in the Middle East. He emphasizes Turkey’s strategic significance by saying: “Turkey is not the center of the world, but it happens to be there.” He expresses that Turkey is at the crossroads connecting Europe and Asia, east and west, north and south. He also states that Turkey is a unique example in Asia, having fought the first war of independence.
In the television program, "Redefining the Turkish Media," ÇOLAKOGLU declares that Turkish media has the most colorful, most exciting media environments in a region stretching from the Balkans to India with 21 nationwide, 15 regional and 220 local TV stations, 28 nationwide distributed daily newspapers, and hundreds of magazines. He adds that the daily newspaper circulation in Turkey is now over 4 million.
COLAKOGLU concludes his insightful, informative, and educational presentation with these words: “Turkey is a stepping stone on the way to expand into the regions which are on top of the global agenda today.”
Following his shortened presentation based on April 2, 2004 for the television program on the basis of his conference, the program conveys a part of the Questions & Answers session. In this part, ÇOLAKOGLU responds to a question by stating that: "Media can be powerful only when their message has already been in the mind and heart of public.”
