A three minute trailer for a piece on the SANE program at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Wash., and what a patient might experience if he or she reports they were raped.
The SANE exam is an exam done by a forensically trained nurse and may involve anything from an interview (to help determine injuries/evidence), to fingernail scrapings, tissue swabs, photographs, etc. This evidence is then preserved in case the victim wishes to press charges against his or her rapist.
To produce this piece, one year of relationship building followed by eight months of contract negotiation allowed for six hours' access to the Harborview Emergency Department. Many thanks to nurses Kathryn McKinnel and Alison Cathro.
The FEAR Project uses documentary multimedia to create dialog about the lasting effects of sexual violence on individuals and communities.
