(This is a slight re-edit of an earlier cut that used to promote an upcoming show.)
Sapporo Safaris is an eight-piece band from Singapore, formed in the middle of 2012 and have played a few shows to rousing success since then. Their collective influences include Arcade Fire, Of Monsters and Men, and Beirut.
I was first contacted to help produce a promo cut for them in late August to put up on their Youtube page to publicise a pair of upcoming shows. I was happy to help them, primarily because the members are friends of mine, and also because the music they produce is ace, and deserving to be promoted.
It was a long session at their practice space, comprising of 4 songs played through in addition to the interview. They were slightly uncomfortable with the cameras trained on them at first, but once they started playing the songs all their inhibitions disappeared. The chemistry between the members are incredible - There are so many instruments, with so many different mindsets to the song, yet when they get together to play all these differences meld together to create a singular vision that is bigger than the sum of its parts. The band is one cohesive unit rather than eight separate people, and watching them run through the song, also became a part of that experience in its rendition.
This was also a first for me - I earn my living in the media industry, but this was my first time doing camerawork. And I think it shows - shots are shaky, the interview is out of focus - but I had fun doing it, and with more shoots I'll get better with time. For an initial outing I think I did pretty well.
