NROC's Developmental Math—An Open Program has won the WCET WOW Award!
Math remediation continues to be a barrier to the opportunities that come with higher education. In the current economic climate, many adults are choosing to go back to school, yet more than half of students entering community college are required to take developmental math before they can begin credit-bearing courses. They take on a financial burden to pay for tuition and for textbooks or software, but most still fail and drop out.
Developmental Math—An Open Program was created specifically to lower these financial hurdles and accelerate the path of students to credit-bearing courses. The program uses diagnostic pre-assessments to identify knowledge gaps and personalize an efficient learning path, circumventing wasteful “seat time” spent re-learning concepts that are already mastered. The modular progarm is built on a learning object architecture that allows pieces to be “remixed” to serve new remediation and redesign approaches colleges are developing. The multi-modal approach of the program aims to harness the power of digital media to engage today’s learners.
