"I wrote this song 10 years ago when I lived in California before I had ever really been anywhere else. I had this longing to get out of town, but felt really stuck where I was - not just the place, but the person I was. I had some friends in a touring band who wrote a song about traveling the country playing music, and I thought damn that’s cool, to have something like that to write about. I hadn’t ditched town, but I had ditched plenty of other things in my life, so I wrote about that. I wanted it to sound like I could have been leaving a place or a person or whatever - and ultimately isn’t leaving just leaving?
I guess by now I’m realizing that for me Carolina represents trying to leave things behind that I never resolved. I don’t know where we get the idea that running from something makes it go away, kinda just gives it something to chase down, but maybe you don’t really know til you try. Oh I tried, and in case you’re wondering, I’m still pickin up the pieces."
