OperaUpClose in association with Malmö Opera presents Puccini's TOSCA.
Tosca is sensual, powerful, and vulnerable. Living in the shadow of theBerlinwall, she is the toast of the GDR elite, until her lover Cavaradossi helps a political prisoner to escape, putting Tosca at the mercy of Stasi chief Scarpia.
Puccini’s tautest drama is given a radical yet affectionate re-working, set in the dying days of the East German republic and stripping the story to its most essential elements. A cast of just four singers and a trio of piano, clarinet and cello will bring OperaUpClose’s trademark intimacy and immediacy to this tale of love, lust, and the corrupting influence of power, while retaining all of the emotional impact of the original.
Malmö Opera is the opposite of King’s Head Theatre – it is known for it’s size. With a 600 square meter scene and an auditorium with more than 1 500 seats, it is one of the largest theatres in northern Europe. Malmö Opera is situated in Sweden’s third largest city and attracts visitors from southern Sweden and Denmark. The repertoire consists of opera, musicals, dance performances and concerts. The opera also have a smaller black box stage, where the touring productions are staged and where the prizewinning department ‘Operaverkstan’ is experimenting with the music theatre genre and stages performances for young people. Malmö Opera presents about 250 performances every year on the two stages, plus 75 on tour.
