I was in San Francisco for another weekend between work engagements and John & Bobbie, who took me sailing on their little boat Bodacious last December, took me out again on their big boat - Bodacious+ a RP OD 48. I tried out boom cam (yes I am on board, just doing the runners behind the camera mostly... but you can hear me shout "runner safe" every so often :)
It was the second season ender race for the party circuit, sailed out of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon. The race was the "crazy 8" pursuit race, where each boat could choose to go either direction around a figure 8 course around Alcatraz Is and Angel Is.
Forecast was for hardly any wind, but after 2 APs the sequence started in a good breeze and B+ rapidly ate up her nearest competition on the first leg and asymmetric run to Alcatraz. But the wind hole around the island let them sail inside AND outside use to leave us with some more work to do.
Symmetric run between the islands was good for us as the 50 footer Deception sparred with the Farr40, slowing both and allowing us to keep clear and pass them. The wind event horizon behind Angel Island was not quite as absolute as in race 1, and we had sent the rest of the fleet in first as probes, so we were able to pick a narrow bit without any crowds to steal our wind.
We were the first boat to break through and from there it was our race to lose. This we tried to do very hard at the last mark rounding, but our extra manoeuvre turned to be a victory roll as even though we let a few boats get closer, we held them off in the dying breeze to take the win.
A great weekend of sailing - thanks to the crew of Bodacious+ !
