ALHAJI PAPA SUSSO, Master Kora Player and Oral Historian, performs at The Gift of Wisdom, a Showcase of Master Artists from the NYFA Folk Artist Development Program, as part of the Asian American Arts Alliance’s Locating the Sacred Festival. The event was held at the Queens Botanical Garden on September 15th, 2012.
Papa Susso is a master Kora (African harp-lute) player and Griot (oral historian) from Gambia, West Africa. He hails from a long line of Griots of the Mandinka people and his father taught him to play the Kora at age five. In 1974, he founded the organization The Manding Music and Dance Limited, which preserves and promotes his people's music and folklore. Papa Susso is now a cultural ambassador in the U.S. and abroad. He gives class presentations and concert performances, recounting his people's history, discussing the role of Griots, and performing their classical repertoire. tcd.freehosting.net/papasusso.htm/
