This ecological clip for an ecological tragedy was made in 1992, with music by a group of genuine Kiwis.
Imported from Australia over 150 years ago, the opossum is destroying the forests of Aotearoa/ New Zealand and ravaging the habitat of many protected species (5 opossums eat as much as one sheep, so add 60 million opossums to 50 million sheep, as was the case when this film was made, and you get an idea of the scale of the problem!). In honour of Tane, Maori God of the forest, a cloak called "Tane's Revenge" was made from over a hundred opossum skins.
2012: Campaigns against the wearing of fur have had a negative impact on the possum culling trade, but there are now increasingly large opossum-free areas in New Zealand where indigenous flora and fauna are flourishing. This is in turn reinforcing public awareness of the country's unique ecosystem. In short, the problem persists but so do attempts to address it.
