The Story of Sand is the first in a trilogy called The Edge of Kauai. In Part I, we trek onto the volcanic sands at the Waimea River mouth with Geologist Chuck Blay (teok.com) and continue up into the headwaters deep in Waimea Canyon. Around the Edge of Kauai, Blay summarizes the complex volcanic origins of the Hawaiian Island. Looking into the hidden microscopic history inside sand seen through his view glass, he reveals more about current shoreline conditions and possibly, even the future of the volcanic mountain island. He studies the effects of sea level fluctuations, weathering, erosion, atmospheric and biospheric impacts.
This short (8 min) is a teaser video and a prelude to a much fuller series to be produced soon. Part II will cover the unique petrified sand dunes of Mahaulepu. Part III will include the detailed study of sand along the entire coastal perimeter at the Edge of Kauai. The story is in the geology and in the geologic history we discover the future.
