I don’t think I’ve been on a ride with so many crashes and punctures as this one! Mind u 3 (or was it 4) of the half dozen punctures happened to Charlie, mainly thanks to his brain-wave of bringing his hard-tail to a full-suss punch-up - Doh!
First to taste dirt was Mic, ripping a big hole in his knee and an even bigger one in his Gore 3/4ers! The rest were daft slides, slips and the occasional over the bar jobs in the soft ground…….. some of which were captured on head-cam! Inc my own, proving that, despite my pre ride boasts to the contrary, you CAN get up-ended on a 29er……… TWICE!!
BUT the best/worst of all was performed by Chris "Crash-Test" Owen. Managing to jam his front wheel on the very steep section into Watendlath thus catapulting him over the bars, tumbling over 25ft headfirst down a gully! Amazingly he was only very shook-up and winded and not in need of the air-ambulance or the fell rescue……phew!
The ride itself turned into a typical OddSox epic……. "Long Moss" being marked on the OS map was an overlooked clue to what the high-pass was going to be like even without the recent drenching the country has just had…….. cracking views tho! Also it didn’t help later in the day when we all got well carried away on the rocky decent off Honister Pass, missing a turn which meant a 30 minute push/carry back over into the valley we should have been in - Ooops!!!
Anyway the sun was shining by mid afternoon and no one lost their sense of humour at all during the day. Although I must say I’m rather grateful that the Yew Tree Tea Rooms had a good supply of their delicious lamb stew and herb cobblers when we eventually got there!
All in a great day in a great place to ride with great craic!
