Pastelpower is the electronic bedroom project of Cherie Ko, whom you may know as the lead guitarist of local buzz band, Obedient Wives Club. Contrary to her guitar heroics in the fuzz-pop quintet, Cherie weaves off-kilter tales of quirky and eccentric characters from her cleverly crafted miniature world, all on the keyboards and in pastelcolor. Magical realism or whimsical idiosyncrasy? Turns out Cherie is heavily inspired by indie cult movies spanning from the '60s - '90s and her songs are largely based on "imaginary characters living their own weird lives" in a pastel town.
In this episode of Kombi Sessions, Cherie ropes in Adel Rashid (Pleasantry, Amateur Takes Control, I Am David Sparkle) on beats for an electro-coustic collaboration. We took the duo to a tree-lined street in the Eastern part of Singapore and did an afternoon of road-tripping, soundtracked by the two songs, "Jean-Paul" and "Mrs. Wolfe." All sorts of misadventures (threats of thunderstorm that eventually became a downpour of ashes) on the road aside, our second episode of Kombi Sessions turns out to be a pretty memorable one, especially with the diner scenes. Both Cherie and Adel are such a pair of super troopers. Keep a keen look out for them both, be it their bands or their solo projects!
