Why did the surfers cross the channel...to find better waves! Thats what we do, continually search for better waves. Somedays you find them and others days you don't. Today (oct. 6, 2012), we were not so lucky. The video above is a honest look at what surfing in Michigan feels like somedays.
You watch the forecast all week. Once the forecast has some wave potential, you start coordinating with your friends if they are able to come out. The night before you start packing all your gear. The next morning you get up at 5:30 am in hopes to find epic waves out at the lake. We pulled into Holland State Park at 7:00 am this morning. Swam across the Holland channel just as it started to get light out. All this, just to find some OK waves. The waves were far from clean. A couple other surfers were already out in the water when we got there. Might as well give it a try, since we put all this effort to get out here on our Saturday morning. We paddled out right along the pier in hopes of staying our of the waves that were breaking, but we still had to fight against the waves. As I was paddling out, ducking under waves, I started to think, "is this really worth it?"
...and then I caught a wave. All the memories of the effort that it took to get to that exact spot in Lake Michigan disappeared and I got to enjoy a 20-30 seconds of bliss as I rode a few waves. Yup...it was well worth the effort.
