ne billion people worldwide live in urban slums; yet at the same time, cities are hubs of entrepreneurship, innovation, and growth. A powerful strategy called Urban Value Chain Development (UVCD) harnesses the resources of today’s cities to develop vibrant local economies while enabling the poor to compete within them. By simultaneously increasing the competiveness of local industries and giving the poor access to higher value markets, this approach generates sustainable growth and reduces urban poverty. Program Manager Yibin Chu sat down with Nicardo Neil of the Value Initiative's Jamaica partner, the Competitiveness Company, to discuss the project and its impact.
