London 2012. The magnificent Moorish/ Art Deco grade II listed EMD Cinema in E17 has been bought by Brazilian cult the UCKG who plan to turn the building into a church, despite not having the necessary planning permission to do so. Planning permission is necessary in the UK to change the use of many types of buildings (including cinemas), in order to protect the prosperity, diversity and character of towns. You cannot simply buy a building a do what you please with it.
The UCKG have tried to get planning permission, against the wishes of the vast majority of people in Walthamstow. In 2003, the government ruled that the building should be retained as a cinema. In 2011 new plans were thrown out by the local council. At a fresh planning meeting in September 2012, Pastor Paul Hill is the first speaker, and threatens the democratically elected council’s planning committee with the outrageous statement that “we (the UCKG) will show you force.” This is simply not how things are done in respectable society.
Fortunately, Debbie Casey was in the audience, and had just turned her camera on to record the speeches. Many thanks to her for allowing me to put this up on youtube.
