I want to know why in 1945, after Bremen played a vital role in the murder and looting of those deemed not German, not white, not straight, not whatever, the new city officials, tasked with denazifying the place names that gave Bremen form, picked Johann Smidt. “I hold the existence of the Jews in Germany to be a misfortune,” I find Smidt in the archive, quoted in an advertisement for a book on his achievements written by a Nazi in Bremen. Not far from the Staatsarchiv is a school built in Smidt’s old garden. No one in Bremen can account for who Smidt was or what he did.
