Six young Black men from Akron, Ohio, enter college, determined to redefine society’s images and low expectations of them. Music, poetry, football, basketball, international relations, law studies, and the desire to change the world, are their guiding posts.
Having attended the nationally acclaimed youth program Alchemy for four to seven years, they are sitting solidly in themselves. Well trained in critical thinking and unusually articulate about their inner lives and struggles, the young men guide us through - and into - the stories that saved them or set them apart.
In turns quiet, thoughtful and exuberant, they are navigating a complex set of changes: classrooms and teachers, new friends and racial provocations, fathers missed, remembered and reconnected with, summer jobs, and financial hardship.
