This question has provoked bitter disputes ever since ‘mother-right’ was proposed by nineteenth century thinkers as the earliest form of family and social life. This talk will examine the many controversies, ranging from the twentieth century taboo against any discussion of the subject to recent findings which have provoked renewed interest.
