Semper Fidelis is the story of a the internal experience of a WWII veteran. My grandfather lived in a house on this street in Upstate New York for most of his life working in this factory. When people would ask him, "John, what are you? What's your ethnicity?" he would reply, "I'm an American Marine".
During his service in the Southeast Pacific theatre of the war he experienced horrible trauma. He would return to his hometown after the war to bury his three best friends who had signed up for service with him. His experience as a Marine became a deep part of him.
This video expresses that ever present identity throughout his life in a look back from the present. The grandeur of the military music contrasts with the drab surroundings of civilian life, but also gives warmth and purpose within the space. The trumpet calls signify different orders within military culture and in this piece express the continuous internal effect of military service.
