Out of Silence: Readings from the Afghan Women’s Writing Project

Arizona State University and the Afghan Women’s Writing Project present MFA students reading work by Afghan women writers. These writers are part of the Afghan Women’s Writing Project (AWWP), founded in 2009 by international journalist and novelist Masha Hamilton. Readings will be selected from poems, essays,and stories written by Afghan women who, for security reasons, use only their first names or remain anonymous. Mentored online by American women writers, the Afghan women’s writings are posted regularly on AWWP’s website. awwproject.org
The event is supported by the Afghan Women’s Writing Project global theatrical initiative, AWWP Presents, along with ASU’s Project Humanities, Department of English, Creative Writing Program, and the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing.
Performed by ASU Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing students, and directed by Melissa Pritchard, Professor of English and Women’s Studies. Co-Directors Paul Ocampo and Tessa Stevens.
