Haven Shepherd is a bubbly energetic 8-year old who loves to run and play with her friends and six brothers and sisters. Her parents have even appropriately nick-named her “Tigger” after the playful tiger that won’t stop bouncing around. Haven, originally from Vietnam, was adopted by the Shepherd family when she was just 19 months old. Haven’s parents were having an affair and she was born out of wedlock. They were so ashamed of their sin, when Haven was just over a year old they strapped bombs to themselves and held each other with their baby girl in their arms, killing themselves. Haven survived the blasts, however lost both her legs below-the-knees.
Haven and fit right in with her new siblings and following in her sisters’ footsteps, Haven entered her first elementary school track meet with high expectations of herself, never mind that she was a double amputee wearing walking legs. Needless to say her feistiness got ahead of her feet, and she fell during the race. Realizing “those ugly running feet” would allow her to run, Haven’s family requested a grant from CAF, and she received her first pair of Össur Running feet shortly after. At her first track meet on her new legs, she placed second, proving her passion and potential. For a 9-year-old, Haven has shown remarkable determination, and is poised to become a star, not only as a challenged athlete, but as a little girl breaking down big barriers.
