Located at Bessie Carmichael Elementary, this after-school program offers academic enrichment, consistent adult caregivers, supportive counciling services and recreation in the SOMA area.
Enrollment: 250 students, grades K-8
Hours: Monday–Friday, 3PM-6PM during school year & 8AM–6PM for eight weeks in the summer.
Demographics: 61% Filipino, 16% Hispanic, 8% African American, 6% other non-white and 4% Caucasian. Bessie Carmichael has the highest percentage of homeless students in the San Francisco Unified School District: 85% live below the poverty line and a majority come from homes where there is limited English proficiency although 80% of the children speak English. Many of the children suffer from learning disabilities, depression, suicidal ideations and other issues that children living in abuse, neglect and poverty endure.
