A quick look at 2004's Half a Tank, a meditation on our dysfunctional relationship with the automobile. Audience members sat in their cars parked in a large circle, tuned to a special broadcast (from a homemade low-powered FM radio transmitter) from CKAR: All Cars, All the Time. The station was covering a momentous occasion with a Dodge Diplomat about to pass 500,000 miles on the odometer--or would it? Half a Tank was created at the height of Peak Oil speculation.
Originally presented in 2003 and 2004 during Vancouver's LIVE: Performance Art Biennale, the show later toured to Toronto, presented by the Toronto Theatre Centre. Interestingly, shortly after the production Vancouver's first 24hr traffic station was launched, with a very similar tag line to CKAR's--All Traffic, All the Time.
