This video, made on my Duckunder Terminal Railway (DUTRY), compares the appearance and operation of two Lionel Pennsylvania Railroad 4-8-2 Mountain M1-type steam locomotives, the M1a (TMCC/RS 4.0) and the new M1b (Legacy/RS 5.0).
I own two Lionel PRR M1a locos, and though I've always liked their appearance and sound, TMCC reception has been marginal on my railroad. However, I ran one of the M1a locos on a friend's layout here in Raleigh in July, 2009, and TMCC reception was stellar.
The new Legacy-equipped M1b demonstrates rock-steady TMCC (Legacy) reception everywhere on the Duckunder layout. The chuffing is excellent (4/revolution), and both engines produce prodigious amounts of smoke--enough to make me turn smoke off at close range.
Right out of the box the tender's marker lights did not illuminate, a problem since repaired (loose wire).
I am selling one of my M1a locomotives to make room on the DUTRY roster for the new M1b.
