Cell Phone Cinema Collection (#13) by Grannell Knox, Jr.
Cell Phone Cinema: Thanks to the photo and video capabilities of cell phones, a more democratized form of photography and videography is now available. The expense, often inherent to past forms of these arts, has largely been absorbed by this technology. While cell phones greatly vary in resolution, the emphasis tends to lie more on the instantaneous nature of the image - similar in this sense to polaroid cameras - rather than aesthetic qualities. Because cell phones and cell phone imaging has become a part of every day culture, there is less of a barrier between the lens and the action. Acting is usually secondary to documentation. Pixelation, rolling shutter effects, and other naturally occurring cell phone picture aesthetics can be seen not as distortion errors but as new criteria by which to qualify images captured by specific technology, much in the same way that 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, hi-8, VHS, VHS-C, etc. each have their unique properties.
