I sow, I scatter is a movement installation that explores the performativity of dance when the stage has been removed and the audience and dancers occupy the same space. A deconstruction of Diderot’s “fourth wall”, the installation focuses on the use of contemporary dance and movement outside of a traditional stage setting by encouraging the audience to act as an invisible voyeur placed in the middle of a mythic world interrupted.
The narrative of I sow, I scatter follows a troupe of seven dancers as they navigate a marred reality with the ideal balance of occupants. That balance is radically disturbed when an outsider threatens to disrupt their established harmony. I sow, I scatter is essentially a narrative examining the trials of seeking and carving out one’s identity in an imbalanced world. Drawing on the ageless conflicts in Greek mythology, the installation is an exploration of individual identification within a group and the threats to an established hierarchy.
I sow, I scatter is the first in a series of performance nights curated by Audrey Rose Smith and TEMP Art Space. The installation features the choreography and creative direction of recent NYU Tisch School of the Arts graduates Matthew Flatley and Robert Vail with production direction by Jonathan Qualtere.
