On February 25, 2021, Third World Newsreel collaborated with Spelman College Documentary Filmmaking and the Documentary Forum at CCNY to present the film STATELESS and a talk with director Michele Stephenson and Clarivel Ruiz of Dominicans Love Haitians Movement, moderated by filmmaker/professor Anjanette Levert. STATELESS is a poetic examination of a historic and ongoing conflict between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. 200,000 Dominicans of Haitian descent have had their citizenship stripped from them, going back to 1929, leaving people literally with no citizenship. The film was streamed ahead of the talk, and the discussion looked both at the making of the film and the activism needed to change conditions. Third World Newsreel is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Peace Development Fund and individual donors, and CARES grants from Humanities NY, NY Community Trust and the NEA.
