'Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves' was commissioned from David Bedford by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 1982, and has been popular with wind orchestras ever since. As well as an extensive selection of conventional percussion instruments, the piece also makes use of eight wine bottles, tuned to different pitches.
