This talk on March 9th 2021 was about the making of and meaning of the film, THE WOMAN’S FILM, a 1971 documentary made by the women of San Francisco Newsreel, a chapter of Newsreel (now Third World Newsreel) in NY. A document of the rising 2nd wave feminist organizing, it featured women of various races, backgrounds and classes, which was unusual at the time. The discussion, held on March 9th, 2021, featured two of the filmmakers, Louise Alaimo and Judith Smith, along with filmmaker/scholar Kathe Sandler and artist/activist/scholar Diane Wong. THE WOMAN’S FILM won at the Berlin film festival in 1971 and was shown there again in 2020. This Evening seminar was cosponsored by Third World Newsreel and the Documentary Forum at CCNY. TWN seminars and workshops are supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the NY State Council on the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Peace Development Fund and individual donors.
