Toronto's seventh annual experimental music festival, X Avant, saw the city play host to a wide variety of talents. Some of the performers at this year's festival included Shigeto, Bob Ostertag, Elaquent, Nick Storring, Sandro Perri, Contact, and many more. However, the focus of this particular piece is on the performance from American-born artist Vanese Smith, who performs regularly under the pseudonym of Pursuit Grooves.
Vanese's performance took place as a part of the "mind/body split" day of X Avant, which started off with a concert at the Music Gallery and afterwards moved to the Drake Hotel where Vanese was slotted to perform a live set of her own music, as well as to orchestrate the visual displays for all three performers, including herself.
Pursuit Grooves displays a high level of musical diversity in her live sets and recordings, ranging from experimental hip hop to her faster, more techno influenced sounds, while retaining an alluring sense of experimentalism in each of her tracks, drawing in listeners eager to follow the narratives being told through her music.
Check out our experience from X Avant in which we were able to attend an awesome live performance from Pursuit Grooves in the video above.
