Performance of lights in a farmhouse in Miguel Pereira, Rio de Janeiro September 2012.
6 researchers are directed to a room each in the farmhouse. Where their task is to turn the light in the room they are in on or off, in time to a metronome and guided by a sequence of timed actions. The sum of the lights of the house recorded on video refer to a set of CO data collected on the same farm at a particular date and time (18/09/12). Binary numbers were calculated to represent the data set, divided by 22 parts per million. These inconceivable numbers to the human brain are played against the language of computers.
The collaborative performance on this site lends itself to 'errors' and mis-timings which are suggested in this short-film. The music played was created using the same methodology, where the binary numbers were translated into a given set of musical notes. Before light points to our presence, before light. And it was made possible with the participation and actions of Jesse, Rachel, Rebecca, Matt, Robin and Mark, who I shared this time in Vera Cruz and then onto Rio researching energy in relation to climate change.
