Within the film transfer industry there is a great deal of confusing information regarding the best method for transferring film to a digital format. Two main contenders are, real-time optical systems such as the Cine-TranzPRO and frame scanning systems. Both methods produce excellent results and one is not vastly superior to the other. Quality will largely depend upon the focusing skill of the operator and the ability to correct colour casting often produced by some lighting systems. Frame scanning is a slower process, so generally more costly. Film containing sound cannot be captured with frame scanning either. Sound film would require another pass of the film to record the audio track with additional work to combine the sound together with the video. The video sample above will allow you to evaluate which system delivers the best results. This was shot in 1959 on Standard 8mm Kodak film. Visit mbproductions.com.au for more information.
