Prairie dogs and black–footed ferrets

In the last 100 years

98% of all prairie dogs were exterminated.

Their range shrank to 5% of what it had been.

Several other species depend on the prairie dog for their survival

including the most endangered mammal in North America

the black–footed ferret.

Once extinct in the wild

black–footed ferrets need prairie dog colonies

for prey and to shelter in their burrows.
