On July 29, 2012, dozens of moms, dads, friends and allies representing children who have fought cancer came together in Hollywood, California to shave their heads for the St. Baldrick's Foundation in order to raise awareness, research funds, and hope. With celebrity barbers and hundreds in attendance, the 46 Mommas took a stand against complacency and despair, raising desperately needed funds and awareness to fight childhood cancer. Shaving for the brave since 2010, the 46 Mommas will soon meet their goal of raising $1,000,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, the largest funder of childhood cancer research outside of the US government.
This day is life-changing, the day when the power of one word strikes families and communities across the nation.
One devastating word -- CANCER -- delivered to 46 families each school day. 46 children each school day. Thatʼs 2 classrooms of children every school day. 46 Mommas, dads, siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and communities all learn that CANCER is the #1 disease killer of American children.
***1 in 5 children diagnosed will die.
***3 of 5 suffer late-onset severe side effects of treatment.
And yet we donʼt know what causes cancer in our children. Maybe thatʼs because only 4% of federal cancer research funding is directed to all 12 forms childhood cancer combined and only one new drug for childhood cancer has come out in the past 20 years. Because of the limited funds, only 18% of research proposals are funded. Today youʼre meeting courageous children and families fighting childhood cancer.
These are families standing up for HOPE. Mommas, dads, families, friends and allies shave for the brave to conquer kidsʼ cancer with a goal of generating $1 Million for the St. Baldrickʼs Foundation to fund life-saving research, for our kids and a future for all kids.
Be an ally. Be our HOPE.
