As an exercise I went out and mapped a virtual wifi space and defined it physically by marking it on the pavement. I previoulsy precieved the spaces to be idealized rings or radius, but learned that they are effected by many things, material, weather, elevation. I also made a mental note of how these spaces fade out and connect with other systems within the city, transportation systems, pedestrian sidewalks etc. This exercise begins to lose relavence when understanding current advancements in wireless networking such as city wide wifi and 3G satellite internet.
Rather then studying a range of materials, that would create different signal strengths I realized the two conditions, either you have signal or you don't. This study helped move me forward by imagining dead zones or places of contemplation without the aid of the internet - how different materials could actually create barriers and closed spaces of virtual disconnection with heightened self or physical connection.
