Clean/lean, 2012 shows the artist sweeping the floor of empty space with a broom, mirroring the routine actions of a cleaner. However, although actions undertaken seem natural enough, the ridged leaning position of the artist supported by a pole creates a puzzling narrative. Framed in consciously constructed yet recognizably natural surroundings, the obscure activity draws the viewer between sense and nonsense, shifting our perceptions of the everyday. Although initially the reasoning behind the artist’s endeavor seems obscure, brief observation of the title of the work reveals all.
Clean/lean is one film from a series manifest from word play that documents playful yet insistent performances in which the artist performs commonplace actions in not such a common way.
