The first person to play rock music in China is supposed to be Cui Jian also named the "father of Chinese rock". The pick of his popularity came in 1989, when his song "I have nothing" (一无所有) became the anthem of the protesters in the uprisings in Tiananmen Square.
Rock music doesn't represent only a resistance to the established system, as it opposes to the mainstream, but is also an expression of creativity among the vast majority of the student population. The main centers of rock music are major cities like Beijing or Shanghai, but also smaller Chinese cities such as Chengdu, Guangzhou and Kunming developed a diverse music scene.
