The Pentagon Papers was a closely held attempt to chronicle the decisions that had led to United States involvement with a 30-year war in Southeast Asia. This video, four of four, presents excerpts from the recently declassified document with historical images to tell the story of this involvement.
Pentagon Papers - Part Four begins in late 1965 with the bombing campaign continuing over North Vietnam and with the United States troop commitment growing from 70,000 to more than 200,000. During the course of the next three years, U.S. troop strength will exceed 500,000. Pentagon Papers concludes with President Lyndon Johnson's decision to not seek the nomination of the Democratic Party for the 1968 election and instead to pursue peace in Southeast Asia.
