Huntington’s Disease is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder. One proposed cellular mechanism underlying neuron degeneration is excitotoxic pathways mediated by glutamate receptors. Overstimulation of these receptors due to their enhanced responsiveness, or increased release or decreased uptake of glutamate, can result in neuronal stress or death via the excessive influx of water an ions, especially calcium.
