It's definitely not an over-hyped statement to call Pleasantry as one of the best bands to emerge from the Singapore local music scene in the recent years. The members of the band - Samantha Teng, Ahmad Ariff, Adel Rashid, Daniaal Adam and Isa Ong - have braved the musical frontiers in different bands and evolved collectively as Pleasantry since 2010. When asked about their musical direction, the band say they do not pigeonhole themselves to a specific genre. As explained by Isa, the band's music "is really a reflection and projection of (the band members') emotions and current feelings at the point in time." And if you have heard their debut EP Porcelain Lenses and their various live tracks such like "Swan Song," the depth of emotions, be it through the seemingly simple lyrics, intricate song structures or the rich and layered arrangement, hits you right where it matters.
For third episode of Kombi Sessions, the band (minus Daniaal the drummer who is away for a five-month road trip of his own) hopped on the blue 1973 Baywindow Kombi and took us through an acoustic rendition of their songs "Habit" and "False Realities." It's a pretty special episode, as this is the very first time we feature four band members seated in two rows of seats in the Kombi van. And no, the van isn't bigger; it's the musical stature of the band that makes it so. Have a listen, and fall in love with Pleasantry just like we did.
