What is really at stake in a system where corrections officers work overtime to take care of their children and inmates are separated from their children for up to 14 years for non-violent crimes they were set up to commit? Tearing women away from their families and leaving behind a legacy of shattered dreams - is this what federal mandatory minimum drug laws were designed for?
IN JUSTICE is a character-driven exploration of the effects of US federal mandatory minimum sentencing laws on family, justice and hope; it illuminates the struggles of women and family members from each seat in the courtroom– judge, defense attorney, prosecuting attorney, and the accused. The film follows the accused once they are found guilty, inside the prison, and examines the relationship between the prisoner and the prison guard, while simultaneously following the family members left behind on the outside.
The director of In Justice is Oriana Bolden. The film is currently in Pre-Production and is fiscally sponsored by the San Francisco Film Society and the bulk of the film will take place in Oakland/Richmond, CA.
