What have been recent developments in network theory? Is it still a very active development in how we see or experience the world or our daily lives?
Network theory, of course, is a very active field of science, so there are lots of very interesting developments. The one that my group has been evolving recently evolves on how you control networks, how you control large complex systems. And I don't necessarily mean the Big Brother type of control, you know. What I really mean is: how do you think about controlling a cell, such that if it features a disease, you can actually stop it? How do you think about influencing an organization that you are the leader of, such that it goes in the direction that you want to take it, and so on.
And the tools for that really come from engineering, because engineers have learnt how to build a car that you can control. And the question is: Can you reverse engineer complex systems and identify where the control points are? How would you influence the control points such that the work organization goes in the right direction rather than going in a direction that you may not want? And the mathematical tools for doing that are being developed right now. My group is very active in that.
