First of all I want to thank Helping hand for selecting such an under addressed topic. Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) is a term, of which, not a lot of people are aware. According to UN 10-15 % people in the world are disabled, but in reality I think that with each disable 2-3 people are also affected making this figure up to 35-40 %. Community’s perception about the PWDs was totally inhuman. Now this kind of thinking needs to be changed. Developed cultures/societies have proper protocols about how to handle, respect and deal with PWDs. They do not consider them as burden on the society and we have a lot of examples of successful personalities in all walks of life like doctors, politicians, educationist and pilots, who had some sort of disability but yet they are successful in their respective fields. If we also want to prosper we should also learn from western societies and should not ignore these people. It is because of our efforts that a bill has been approved in Parliament that from now onwards there will be a reserved seat for PWDs in Senate, National and Provincial assemblies. Because of the war on terror, ratio of disabled people in Pakistan has been increased tremendously. HHRD’s conference will be a great platform as people from different races will participate. This kind of effort by HHRD and other organizations will help rehabilitate PWDs and make them productive citizen.
