Local Merchants kick-off the Holiday Season with Plaid Friday, In the Black and Oakland Grown: Oakland's Local Shopping Resource.
It's no surprise that Oakland's interconnected Downtown, Uptown, Old Oakland, and Jack London Square districts comprise a real shopping destination on November 23rd, the day after Thanksgiving.
In true Oakland style, the town will be hosting multiple fun celebratory activities to draw people to do their holiday shopping at Oakland's local, independent businesses and artists.
Downtown and Citywide, local businesses will be open and offering discounts as part of the Plaid Friday initiative, a shop local day that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses, and offers an alternative to the the big box “Black Friday”.
In the downtown and uptown areas, Plaid Friday will be integrating with In the Black, a high-energy collection of permanent spots and pop-ups from designers and entrepreneurs around town. Together, these initiatives prove to be a diverse and joyful alternative to the cut-throat stampedes of discount-crazed shoppers at malls and big box stores.
In addition to providing affordable gift options, Oakland's neighborhood businesses will ensure that shopping local is convenient, with great parking and transportation options. Thanks to the City of Oakland, parking will be free at all meters and City-owned garages on Friday November 23rd, and every weekend thereafter through the end of the year. And shoppers in the downtown/uptown/Jack London Square corridor will be able to ride the B Shuttle for free all along the corridor.
Throughout the holiday season and all year long, the Oakland Grown campaign encourages those who love Oakland to put their money where their heart is and shop with the town's locally-owned and independent businesses. The Oakland Grown campaign points people back to the website, Oakland Grown dot org, where locals can find information on everything they need to shop local for the holidays AND year-round. Visit the website for information about Plaid Friday, In the Black, Free Parking, the B Shuttle, store listings throughout Oakland, online shopping, an online gift guide, and the Oakland Grown Card – Oakland's innovative alternative to the corporate gift card.
